“You are what you think, You are what you eat, You are what you drink!?”
When the bottled Water industry was was beginning to take hold about 20 years ago, I researched the local market as part of a University project and then prepared a report on my findings. This was the first time I began to wonder whether Water… is Water.
If you’re like I was, you had heard all your life from umpteen self-proclaimed well-meaning authorities on health or from industry spokesmen or government leaders or special interest groups that you should always drink 8 cups of Water a day and maybe you had heard that you should add Water for each half hour of exercise, coffee, tea, soda/pop, juice, or sports drink as well. Yes it seemed hydration was pretty simple. When I felt thirsty, I drank. I rarely managed to consume a full 8 cups a day but then these were just guidelines, it’s not like my body really required this Water to perform any vital functions, right?
—pause to go drink 1 liter (4 x 250ml cup) of Water….
Ok, I’m back. Excuse me. That’s better. Where was I? Oh yeah, so now we know or at least we believe we kind of… seem to…. need…. or have use for…. some amount of Water on a…. somewhat daily basis. What does that tell us? Should we go and take Water from the nearest and easiest source available to us? Does it matter if our drinking Water is pristine– clean, pure, and fast-moving like a untouched glacier stream or murky and salty like the ocean, or does our body tell us it doesn’t matter– Water is Water. But is it?
What about Source? Minerals? Chemicals? Filters? Alkalinity? Electrolytes? Electrical Charge? Structure? Magnetism? Memory? Do any of those things even matter? After all, Water is just Water– right?
In Dr. Batmanghelidj’s paradigm changing book: “Your Body’s Many Cries For Water”, he tells us if you’re thirsty, you’re already too late. SAY WHAT!? But that’s what tells me when I need to drink some of that clear colored tasteless Water stuff, isn’t it? If thirst isn’t the body’s signal to drink Water, what is and what purpose then does thirst serve? I guess this is as good a time as any to offer one of my favorite learning and self-improvement phrases: “You don’t know what you don’t know”. Sounds simple but it’s a powerful statement that any student wanting to learn or master anything would do well to remember and revisit often. If I can be wrong about something as seemingly obvious and simple as my body’s signal(s) for thirst, what else don’t I know about Water?
Maybe Water isn’t just Water. Sure, at its foundation, according to my high school chemistry classes, a WATER molecule is simply 2 HYDROGEN atoms joining with 1 OXYGEN atom. But could there be more to the equation that they didn’t teach us? Could there be more to this simple looking clear empty tasting liquid that I don’t know what I don’t know about?
Maybe, just maybe, there really is more to this Water thing that makes up approximately 70% of the entire Earth. Maybe, just maybe, there is something you and I and every other human being on this planet should know about this seemingly nondescript substance that makes up between 50 and 75% of the human body with up to 85% concentration in the brain alone and 15-20% concentration in our bones.
Welcome to the wild, sometimes wacky, and wondrous world of H2- O-h My!
Ready to go with the flow, across the rocks, down the vortex, and under or even behind the waterfall?
Yes, we’ll swim deftly through questions like:
“What the Bleep is the difference between Water coming from a tap and all those expensive bottled Waters on the market?” Why would you want to boil Water and can you boil water with….Ice?”
“What the Bleep is Reverse Osmosis, Ozonated, Filtered, Chlorinated, Electrolyzed Reduced, Alkaline, Ionized, Structured, Healing, Oxygenated, and Fortified WATER?”
“Does the container holding the Water matter and what does BPA and BPS or BPA and BPS free mean?”
“Does it matter what kind of matter Water is?”
“Is Water a liquid, a gas, a solid, all of the above, or something more mysterious, a state of matter just recently discovered?”
“Which is more important to the human body, Water or food?”
“What is the optimal Water we should be drinking to maximize performance and health or is Water just Water?”
Well, don’t sweat it. You and I are going to get to the bottom of this Water thing before it reaches high tide. We’re going to dive into the deep end and battle the rapids with US Marine-like precision and discipline and on this nautical voyage we’re going to discover once and for all if Water is Water.
Take a sip, dip a toe in, or jump right in and join me, it’s a beautiful day for a swim and the Water is waiting…..
